  1. The digital scans of the PapersPast website are good at "reading" the Victorian-era newspapers but they sometimes misread some letters. This can be a problem when you're searching for Chinese names. In this list "Sow Hoy" should really be "Sew Hoy": Choie Sew Hoy, the Dunedin merchant.
    Here is an attempt to transcribe the same list of names of Otago Chinese, who donated money when the government ship Kakanui was lost with all on board in February 1891:
